Breeding Triops Made Easy – A Guide for All Ages

Do you want to see your own Triops hatch and grow? With a few simple tips, even beginners can successfully raise them – whether children or adults.

✅ With Conditioner

  • Place the water conditioner in the rearing tank for 4–6 hours.
  • The water will turn slightly yellow – then remove the conditioner.
  • Now you can add the egg-sand mixture to the water.
  • One conditioner is sufficient for 20 liters of water.
  • Extra tip: Open the bag and sprinkle a few crumbs into the tank → often results in an even better hatching rate!

✅ Without Conditioner

  • Take a small fauna box (1–3 liters) or a clean plastic container.
  • Mix 0.3 l still mineral water (e.g., Evian) with 0.7 l distilled water or osmosis water
  • Place the box in a quiet, bright spot (not in direct sunlight).
  • Illuminate for approx. 12 hours a day with LED light.
  • First nauplii (Triops babies) hatch after 24–48 hours.
  • If not, wait up to 7 days – sometimes the eggs need more time.

✅ Feeding young Triops

  • From hatching:
    • First 4 days: 1x daily a toothpick tip of green powdered food (dissolve in water).
    • After that: fine powdered food or crushed Triops food.
  • Important: If a pellicle forms (white film on the water), stop feeding until the Triops eat holes in it.
  • From 5 mm in size: give small food pellets.
  • From 10 mm in size: whole food pellets without crushing.

✅ Transferring to the Aquarium

  • At 0.5–1 cm in size, the Triops can be moved to a larger aquarium (10–60 liters).
  • Use tap water that has been running with a filter and pump for 2 days.
  • If tap water is not suitable → use osmosis or distilled water.
  • Substrate: Quartz sand (0.8 mm grain size), 1–2 cm high.
  • Filter: Sponge filter + optional moss ball.
  • Temperature: Room temperature of 20 - 23 degrees is sufficient, small fluctuations are not a problem.

✅ Plants in the Triops Tank

  • In the rearing tank: do not add plants.
  • In the large aquarium: use waterweed, moss balls, duckweed, or Najas.
