Saltwater Fairy Shrimp / Brine Shrimp Artemia
Brine shrimp, scientifically known as Artemia, are small crustaceans belonging to the order Branchiopoda. They are also known as "salt shrimp" or "brine shrimp." Here is some important information about these interesting organisms:
-
Habitat:
- Artemia live in extremely saline waters, such as salt flats, salt lakes, and salt lagoons. They are adapted to high salt concentrations that would be lethal to most other living creatures.
-
Distribution:
- Brine shrimp are found worldwide in saline inland waters. Known occurrences include the Great Salt Lake in the USA, Lake Urmia in Iran, and many salt lakes in Central Asia.
-
Anatomy and Appearance:
- Artemia have an elongated body with many paired, leaf-like legs (phyllopods) that are used for locomotion and filtering food particles from the water. They do not have hard shells, but a flexible, transparent skin.
-
Life Cycle:
- Artemia lay eggs, which are called cysts. These cysts are extremely resistant and can survive long periods of drought. When they return to water, nauplii (larvae) hatch from them.
- The life cycle includes several larval stages before they grow into adult animals.
-
Ecological Importance:
- Artemia are an important food source for many bird species, especially migratory birds that use saline wetlands as resting places.
- They also play a role in aquaculture, as they are often used as feed for fish and shrimp larvae.
-
Economic Importance:
- Artemia cysts are harvested commercially and sold worldwide as high-quality feed in aquaculture. Their ability to survive for long periods in cyst form and hatch quickly under suitable conditions makes them ideal for this purpose.
-
Research and Science:
- Due to their easy breeding and adaptability to extreme environmental conditions, Artemia are also a popular model organism in science. They are often used in studies of ecology, evolution, and environmental stress.
Included is
- 1 x egg/salt mixture of approx. 32 grams for 1 liter of fresh water (at least 1000 eggs)
-
1 packet of fine food for the small nauplii
A room temperature of 10° to 25° Celsius is perfectly suitable for successful breeding.
The fairy shrimp reach a body length of up to 3 centimeters and live for approx. 12 weeks.
Instructions:
Add the egg/salt mixture to a container with one liter of fresh water.
Then stir until the salt has dissolved.
Stir gently 1 to 2 times a day. After 24 hours you will see the first nauplii. Wait 2 days
until the first feeding. For feeding, take some algae powder and dissolve it in water. Then use the pipette
add this mixture to the water until it is slightly green. Wait until the water is clear again before the next feeding.
The nauplii will grow quickly and lay their first eggs in the water.
I wish you much fun and joy with the primeval shrimp.
