What are Fairy Shrimp?

Fairy shrimp are small branchiopods belonging to the order Anostraca. They are considered "primeval" crustaceans and have lived on Earth for many millions of years. They owe their enchanting name to their transparent bodies and elegant swimming movements.

Unlike Triops, fairy shrimp do not have a large dorsal shield. They usually swim on their backs and rhythmically move their numerous small, leaf-like legs through the water. These legs serve simultaneously for locomotion, breathing, and feeding.

Raising Fairy Shrimp Yourself

Raising fairy shrimp is an exciting nature project for children and adults. For rearing, a small, clean container with suitable water is needed, depending on the species. Additionally, sufficient light and an appropriate water temperature are important.

The eggs are placed into the prepared water. Under suitable conditions, tiny fairy shrimp larvae can hatch after a short time. These freshly hatched animals are also called nauplii. Initially, they are only visible as small, bright dots in the water.

After hatching, the young fairy shrimp require very fine food. Suitable options include finely dosed algae powder or special dust food. Only small amounts should be fed to keep the water clean.

What Kind of Water Do Fairy Shrimp Need?

Water requirements can vary depending on the fairy shrimp species. Many freshwater fairy shrimp need mineral-poor and unpolluted water. Therefore, tap water is not always suitable, as it can contain a lot of lime, chlorine, or other substances depending on the region.

Artemia, or brine shrimp, are an exception. They live in saltwater and require a specially prepared salt solution. Freshwater fairy shrimp and Artemia should therefore not be raised using the same instructions.

What Types of Fairy Shrimp Are There?

In our shop, you will find different types of fairy shrimp. These include, among others, Thai fairy shrimp of the species Branchinella thailandensis, Beaver-tailed fairy shrimp, and Streptocephalus sirindhornae.

Each species has its own characteristics. Some species prefer warmer water, while others can also be raised at normal room temperature. Before starting, you should always consult the respective product description and rearing instructions.

Fairy Shrimp for Children and Schools

Raising fairy shrimp is particularly well-suited as a small nature project. Children can observe how tiny resting eggs first develop into larvae and then into fully developed animals.

Fairy shrimp can also be interesting for schools, kindergartens, and working groups. The animals provide a vivid insight into the development and adaptability of organisms in temporarily drying waters. For younger children, rearing should always be done together with an adult.
